Some legal advice on aspects of the Internet. David Lewis (1) E-payment and e-money trends are you protected? The full potential of the Internet will only be realised when electronic payment systems are more secure. Currently the Internet lacks a fast, easy and secure way to let consumers buy and sell electronically, and theres no electronic money system on the market that is legal tender.

ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed. The earliest manmade cement, called hydraulic lime, was developed in 1756, when an English engineer named John Smeaton needed a strong material to rebuild the Eddystone lighthouse off the coast of Devon. Although the Romans had used hydraulic cement, the formula was lost from the collapse of their empire in the fifth century A.D. until Smeaton reinvented it. During the early nineteenth century several other Englishmen contributed to the refinement of synthetic cement, most notably Joseph Aspdin and Isaac Charles Johnson. In 1824 Aspdin took out a patent on a synthetic blend of limestone and clay which he called Portland cement because it resembled limestone quarried on the English Isle of Portland. However, Aspdins product was not as strong as that produced in 1850 by Johnson, whose formula served as the basis of the Portland cement that is still widely used today. Concrete made with Portland cement is considered superior to that made with natural cement because it is stronger, more durable, and of more consistent quality. According to the American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), Portland cement is made by mixing calcareous (consisting mostly of calcium carbonate) material such as limestone with silica-, alumina-, and iron oxide-containing materials. These substances are then burned until they fuse together, and the resulting admixture, or clinker, is ground to form Portland cement.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. Waylan Cooper has joined the firm in the area of bankruptcy law.
They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

Retailers Eye Non-Prescription Reading Glasses If you are holding this page at arms length to read it, you should think about getting a pair of glasses. There are over 90 million Americans over the age of 40 suffering from presbyopia. The condition refers to the gradual decline in the ability of your eyes to focus on nearby objects. As the average age of the American population gets older overall, more people will require at least some help from reading glasses.
THE saying boys dont make passes at girls who wear glasses is no longer true - just look at the impact of designer spectacles on todays fashion scene. If you wear glasses, you can use them to make a fashion statement, even if you cant afford Calvin Klein or Donna Karan frames. The most important things to keep in mind when choosing spectacles are the shape of your face, and your facial features. Choose a pair that will accentuate your good points, and minimise your bad ones.

The boom in plastic surgery has now hit the stock market, with Spanish group Corporacion Dermoestetica enjoying a perfectly shaped float on the Madrid Bolsa. Buoyed by a local boom in breast implants, the company saw an 18.9 per cent rise in its share price on the first day of trading on Tuesday, closing the week 21 per cent up at EUR11.02 (pounds 7.57). In typically flamboyant fashion, Dermoesteticas chairman, Jose Maria Suescan, brought 50 models dressed as nurses on to the Bolsas floor for the launch.
Two ingredients common in many hair- and skin-care products have been linked to abnormal development of breasts in boys. Lavender oil and tea tree oil con tain compounds that act like female sex hormones and interfere with male hormones, researchers have determined. Enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia, result from an imbalance between the activity of estrogens, which stimulate breast growth, and estrogen-inhibiting androgens. The condition is extremely rare before puberty, says Denver-area pediatric endocrinologist Clifford Bloch.
Repeated topical exposure to lavender and tea tree oils may result in prepubertal gynaecomastia (enlarged breasts) in young boys, endocrinologists have concluded. Henley D et al. Prepubertal Gynecomastia Linked to Lavender and Tea Tree Oils. New England Journal of Medicine 2007; 356: 479-85.

Hypnosis is a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings. But its not all that different from being absorbed in thought, or reading a book. With hypnosis, you are far more open to suggestion, at least, to suggestions compatible with what you are motivated to achieve. It is a form of intense receptive concentration. Accordingly, hypnosis often is used to modify behavior and overcome phobias and bad habits-it can help you make changes that youve been unable to make otherwise. Questions notwithstanding, hypnosis seems to be an effective modality for many people. In fact, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel has endorsed its use for the relief of various types of chronic pain. As a relaxation technique, hypnosis can help reduce your stress. Its also used to relieve phobias, lessen anxiety, break addictions and to ease symptoms of conditions such as asthma or allergy. Using hypnosis can help patients control nausea and vomiting from cancer medications and morning sickness, reduce bleeding during surgery, steady the heartbeat and bring down blood pressure.

What made the difference was aloof frontwoman Victoria Bergsman, who last year dramatically left the band hours before an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show. This in the wake of a traumatic trip to the States, where she collapsed on a New York stage and the band had their equipment nicked in Boston. The Concretes have recruited a new singer from within their own ranks- drummer Lisa Millberg. Taking just the bands nervy start, Millberg seems to be a mistake. The gangly blondes awful melodic aim makes you fear for the lights. You only snatch at rare moments where she finds a delicate sigh that matches the tenderness of certain songs. Uncomfortable at the front of the stage, Millberg continually seeks reassurance from colleagues, especially guitarist Maria Eriksson, with whom she shares some wayward call and responses. Yet Millberg connects with the crowd, not only through vulnerability, but also with a playful banter unknown in previous shows. She points out that this is the 11th time the outfit have performed in London and adds that “the venues keep getting smaller”. Such is The Concretes plight that the vocalist introduces “Oh Boy” with an urge to vote for their forthcoming single on digital station BBC6. This is one of the few numbers close to matching the band in their pomp.

In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

M2 BEST BOOKS-(C)2000-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Readers will be aided in all aspects of the profession based on knowledge acquired by Brooks through his career. Brooks has a graduate level academic background, and has trained an average of ten clients a day, five days a week, over a nine year period. He has also directed a 5,000 member health club and successfully managed his own personal training business, making him more than qualified to produce a book on the subject. To further build on the authors experiences, he has included information and personal interviews with other experts. The in-depth resource blends usable and time-tested information into one complete, practical volume, to provide information on starting and running a personal fitness business, fitness testing and assessment, how to identify clients goals and create fitness tests specifically for them, how to develop cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training programmes, and more.
THIS MONTH IM NOT writing for you, but to you. I get many letters from aspiring and perspiring personal trainers with myriad questions ranging from how to raise the bar–pun intended–to how to raise their rates. They want to know how to start, how to stay and how to grow as a business. Ill try to hit some of the recurring themes this month. * Job vs. career. Theres no correct answer here; just dont be one and say youre the other. Many people elect to become trainers as a way to supplement their income but have no desire to break new ground in health or fitness. Others make it their lifes work and will stop at nothing to see it through. To flirt with the field and portray yourself as a lifer to raise your rates is not cool. * Commit to the hours. Look, garbage men work early in the morning and bartenders work late at night. Trainers usually work when others dont, like many service-industry people. This is something you should know before entering the profession. If thats not okay with you, youll be the trainer who gripes to all his clients about being tired and the hours he keeps. Would you want to train with that guy?

Concrete BlockConcrete mortar was used by the Romans as early as 200 B.C. to bind shaped stones together in the construction of buildings. During the reign of the Roman emperor Caligula, in 37-41 A.D. , small blocks of precast concrete were used as a construction material in the region around present-day Naples, Italy. Much of the concrete technology developed by the Romans was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was not until 1824 that the English stonemason Joseph Aspdin developed portland cement, which became one of the key components of modern concrete. The first hollow concrete block was designed in 1890 by Harmon S. Palmer in the United States. After 10 years of experimenting, Palmer patented the design in 1900. Palmers blocks were 8 in (20.3 cm) by 10 in (25.4 cm) by 30 in (76.2 cm), and they were so heavy they had to be lifted into place with a small crane. By 1905, an estimated 1,500 companies were manufacturing concrete blocks in the United States.

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Our panel of industry experts covered the gamut of topics in our seventh annual legal roundtable. As the economy dips, firms are adjusting to meet the needs of industry, while also focusing on ways to better serve the large corporate client. The panel also discussed recruiting and mentoring trends for young associates, supporting the states startup businesses and the changing role of technology in the legal field.

Thieves broke into a hospital patients home and set it on fire. Police are investigating last nights blaze in Cragside Gardens, Lobley, Hill, Gateshead. Fire crews were called to the house at 7pm and found the kitchen on fire. The woman, who lives at the property is in hospital and the house was empty.
Although cabinetry will always be cost necessary in kitchens, builders are seeing increased demand for cabinetry installed throughout homes. Offering other-room cabinetry as an upgrade provides storage and increased value for homeowners, while giving builders a competitive advantage and dealers an opportunity to increase cabinet sales. Outside of the kitchen and bath, the most popular room in the home for built-in cabinetry is the home office. The number of people who telecommute is affecting the upsurge in home offices. Home offices are becoming a standard offering from builders; says Connie Edwards, director of design for Timberlake Cabinets (circle 102). Other popular rooms include laundries, butlers pantries, hobby rooms, and mudrooms, says Kim Dunn, marketing publications specialist for Wellborn Cabinets (circle 103). Entertainment/media rooms, home libraries, and window-seat and fireplace-surround configurations also are in demand.

Take the broad bean. Once it was thought entirely unremarkable to produce broad beans. Most people didnt really like them, but that was because most people left on the bitter outer skin. Carefully and laboriously peeled, broad beans are really delicious and can be cooked in all kinds of ways. The only social problem with the broad bean, in those innocent days, was that the obvious effort which went into preparing it could be felt by the guest to be somewhat oppressive - a combination of showing off and bullying. Fortunately, though, most guests are more interested in themselves than in the labours of the cook, and so most people didnt mind. Then, suddenly, the broad bean became fashionable. Sadly, I had to abandon it and wait until the fashion passed, as indeed it did. But now, to my horror, I find it is in fashion once again. At least I assume it is, because we were recently given delicious broad beans on toast as a first course in the house of the most achingly fashionable couple I know. This time Im not going to give in; however chic it may be, Im going to carry on cooking broad beans, especially at this time of year. To me they mean early summer, just as much as Jersey potatoes and mint. They are not only delicious, with their bitter, subtle taste; they also look beautiful in their satisfactory roundness faintly reminiscent, I used to think as a schoolgirl, of the curving buttocks of the naked Greek athletes portrayed in my classical history textbooks. The intense green is beautiful too, especially if, like me, you use frozen beans. It cannot be denied that peeling broad beans, though easy, is very time-consuming. The busy cook cannot possibly do it. There are some Middle Eastern food shops or supermarkets which sell broad beans ready peeled and frozen. Otherwise it is a question of delegation. Children can be very useful: their small, clever fingers are ideally suited to the work. Unfortunately, though, children are a terrible health hazard in the kitchen. They have no interest in even the most elementary hygiene and one has no idea where those clever fingers have been; I always reject any offering of food cooked by children and handled by filthy childish hands. Still, under close supervision - children prone to worms should be avoided older children can be very useful. They should spread the frozen beans on a large flat tray to thaw, before starting.

Considering the fact that mountainbike (MTB) marathon and ultraendurance events also as MTB stage races have become very popular during the last decade knowledge is sparse about the effects on hematological system due to prolonged strenuous exercise. Endurance trained athletes generally show an increased blood volume mainly due to plasma volume (PV) expansion, which already exerts after a few days of prolonged exercise, accompanied by lower hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) levels. On a short term basis dehydration caused by prolonged exertive exercise leads to enhanced concentrations of Hb and Hct due to decreased PV. In contrast to acute exercise it has been well documented as a long term adaptation that regular endurance training over long term periods or repeated bouts of strenuous exercise, e. g. repetitive cycling races or cycling stage races over several consecutive days, lead to a fall in both Hb and Hct levels due to a progressive enlargement in particular in PV. Changes in hematological parameters are known to considerably influence physical performance, especially in aerobic endurance sports such as mountainbiking. An increase in PV normally results in enhanced aerobic performance due to reduced blood viscosity, thereby optimized microcirculation and improved oxygen delivery capacity to the working muscle (Schumacher et. al., 2000). Hematological parameters Hb and Hct are highly sensible to acute effects. The effects of prolonged exercise on hematological status are mainly dependent on total load (mode and duration) of exercise, as well as thermal stress (temperature and humidity) and fluid intake (FI) (Convertino, 1991; Fellmann et. al., 1999; Neumayr et. al., 2002; Sawka et. al., 2000; Schumacher et. al., 2000). The Transalp Challenge (TAC) is one of the hardest MTB marathon races in the world (besides Cape Epic/SA and Transrockies/USA), covering eight consecutive stages. The key data of TAC 2004 are: 22.500 m (altitude difference), 662 km (distance), which reflects a daily average of 2.812,5 m along with 82.75 km. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine development and changes in haematological variables Hb, Hct and PV during this MTB stage race. Six MTB athletes (5 male, 1 female–non professional, reliably not being doped) participated in the field study (Table 1), which was performed according to the Declaration of Helsinki. When exclusively professional cyclists are studied the risk of obtaining falsified data influenced by any kind of doping should be considered. Blood samples were drawn (E0: baseline levels pre race, post exercise values 5 to 10 minutes after individual finish of stages E1, E4, E6) after five minutes of rest in supine position to determine Hb and Hct levels (Miniphotometer plus LP 20, Lange/Germany). Blood samples derived from capillary finger tip. The amount of daily FI including breakfast was recorded by questionnaire immediately after individual finishes (down to an accuracy of 125 ml). Relative changes in PV ([DELTA]%PV) were calculated from pre- and post exercise values of Hb and Hct according to the equation of Strauss et. al. (1951): [DELTA]%PV = 100 x [([Hb.sub.pre]/[Hb.sub.post]) x (1-[Hct.sub.post]/1-[Hct.sub.pre])]. Parameters were analysed by using SPSS software package, version 11.0 (Chicago, Illinois, USA). Changes in both Hb (.Hb) and Hct ([DELTA]%Hct) were calculated by paired t test, correlations were computed by Pearsons correlation coefficient (r). Values are presented as means [+ or -] SD. P-values lt; 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. This field study detected a significant increase in Hb and Hct after the first stage of TAC 2004 while the impact on calculated PV is pronounced. In the course of the race values of both Hb and Hct decreased significantly, PV was calculated to be expanded. Schmidt et. al. (2000) found a similar decline in PV for submaximal load (10.5%).
If your favorite kind of bike riding is fast and loose, the Sand Creek Mountain Bicycle Racing Series is perfect for you. This popular series, in its eighth year, is sponsored and organized by Sand Creek Sports Inc. The series is a slate of nationally recognized local races that has featured more than 50 races since 1990. Events are open to pros and novices. There are fewer races this year, but that doesnt mean the competition will be any less fierce.
Theres nothing extreme about bicycle designer Joe Breeze, even though between 1976 and 1984 he finished first 10 times–more than any other rider–in the legendary Repack mountain-bike races held on Marin Countys Mt. Tamalpais, the place where the sport was born. For him, bicycles have always been first and foremost a means of transportation–a way of getting from point A to point B. Sometimes that means gutting it out from the flats of Fairfax up onto the flanks of Mt. Tam, but more often cycling is about getting to and from school, commuting to work, or riding to the store for a sack of groceries.

In an otherwise unstable economy, the housing market has remained strong, with exceptionally low mortgage rates encouraging many to buy homes, driving up home prices, and enabling homeowners to refinance existing mortgages at lower rates. Even though many analysts believe that the mortgage rates bottomed-out in mid-June and the refinancing boom may have ended, rates are still low by historical standards, and although it is slower, the demand for housing is still present.
Colorado Springs-area home construction continued its blistering pace in the first quarter, although one economist fears an oversupply could drive down prices in the next few years. Single-family home building permits totaled 1,392 from January through March — a 20.2 percent jump from the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The number of permits this year puts Colorado Springs and El Paso County on pace to shatter the record of 5,059 single-family permits, set only last year.

Q After working out, I love to relax in the sauna or steam room, but I heard they can be bad for the skin. Is this true? But if you have normal skin, limited exposure (no more than 15 minutes at a time) isnt harmful and actually can be beneficial to the skin, Luftman says. Aside from giving you a relaxed feeling, “it dilates blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the skin, so you get a rosy glow,” she explains. Moist or dry heat can also help those with cystic acne on the face and body. “Heat tends to help soften the cysts,” she adds. To ensure that the steam or sauna session isnt harmful to your skin, follow these tips: * Shower first. Yeast on the body grows quickly when skin becomes warm, oily and sweaty (such as after exercise). Normal cleansing typically prevents overgrowth, but if you go directly into a hot environment like a sauna or steam room where you continue sweating, theres a greater chance of developing a condition called tinea versicolor, says Luftman. This looks like white or brown thin scaly patches that may itch, particularly when you sweat. (Consult your dermatologist if you think you have these symptoms; they can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription antifungal creams or sprays.)

Business Editors Sharper Image Corp. (Nasdaq:SHRP) today announced that it will host a Web cast replay of the Annual Shareholders meeting to be held on June 3, 2002. Richard Thalheimer, chairman, founder and chief executive officer, Tracy Wan, president and chief operating officer, and Jeff Forgan, executive vice president and chief financial officer, will present at this years annual meeting.
THE MUCH-CRITICISED host of the Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City, has been involved in last-minute efforts to boost the venues image ahead of tonights opening ceremony. The citizens of Salt Lake City in Utah have been taken back by recent reports which have variously described their home as “the strangest state in America”, “puritanical”, “a theocracy”, “holier- than-thou Hicksville” and “Dullsville”.
